Open Hinged Shutters Reminder

There was a recent theft of shutters in the UH. The stolen shutters were secured to the house by the old-style open top hinges which rely on gravity to hold the shutter in place. All one has to do to remove the shutters is lift them off of their hinges. Homeowners like the ease of removal when it comes time to wash or repaint the shutters; so do the crooks.
NOPP recommends against the use of this style hinge for first floor shutters and instead recommends security designed star-head screws and bolts as well as closed end hinges. In addition, the use of powder coated aluminum downspouts for the last 10- 12 feet of the downspout helps discourage theft. The powder coating usually comes in both the oxidized brown copper color and the more heavily oxidized green color.
